Grand Steel Products, Inc. Announces the Appointment of Michael Barnett as President

Grand Steel Products, Inc., a flat rolled steel service center and steel distributor located in Wixom, Michigan announced a recent change in leadership. “It is with great pleasure, excitement and confidence that I announce that Michael Barnett has been appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of Grand Steel Products, Inc.,” stated Jim Barnett, current President and COO of Grand Steel. “Michael has spearheaded the sales growth of GSP for the last 10 years, while learning the nuances of the steel distribution business from purchasing, production, transportation, accounting and all the aspects in between.” This year, Jim and Michael also added a new company within the same property of Grand Steel Products’ by adding Steel Testing Laboratory (STL) which performs mechanical an chemical testing that provides customers with the data and information necessary to meet specific steel application needed.

Grand Steel Products, Inc., inventories a complete line of hot rolled, cold rolled, and coated material. GSP supply material to a diverse range of industries, including construction, automotive, mining, agriculture, furniture, and others. The Grand Steel team has over 150 years of combined experience in steel supply, steel slitting, and steel services, therefore, their customers receive value from the products that we sell and the services that we provide before, during, and after the sales process.

After graduating from Western Michigan University in 2003 with a degree in Finance and Economics, Michael started his professional career in the finance world. After a few years in sales, he was fast-tracked into a management program where he learned many valuable management skills. During that tenure, he was encouraged by his father to join Grand Steel Products, which he did in early 2006.

Michael has overseen the growth of Grand Steel Products, including the purchase of an operations building in 2008, purchase and installation of a slitting line in 2011, and office renovations and additions in 2014, among other purchases and acquisitions. Michael also assisted in the formation of Barnett Industrial Properties and Grand Steel Transport, where he is a Partner.

Mike has been active with the Association of Steel Distributors, where he has served on the board since 2013. He has held a variety of roles within the ASD and has received numerous recognition awards.

“Michael is a champion for a strong domestic steel industry and the growth of domestic manufacturing, working hard every day to promote the strength, growth, and change needed to sustain this and attending many industry events,” explained Jim Barnett during the recent press conference.

Outside of the office, Michael has a wife and 3 children. He is very active with The Friendship Circle of Michigan, a non-profit organization which supports individuals with special needs and their families by providing recreational, social, educational and vocational programming. Michael has served as the coach of the sports program, sat on event boards, and continues to be a fundraiser and advocate for this amazing organization. Other charitable organizations which Michael is currently involved with include The Childrens Tumor Foundation with a mission to end Neurofibromatosis (NF), and LUNGevity, the nation’s largest lung cancer-focused non-profit.

Michael expressed the success of Grand Steel Products to his father and the workers in the front office and in the plant and is excited about what the future will bring.
